A Texas man shot his wife before turning the gun on himself, just days after moving into a new home, officials said.
Authorities received a call Sunday morning from 26-year-old Rachel Butler saying that her husband shot her at their Montgomery County home, news station KHOU reported.
Police arrived to find her with a gunshot wound to the chest and her 39-year-old husband, Jason Butler, dead after shooting himself in the head in the driveway.
The 26-year-old mom was rushed to Conroe Regional Hospital in critical condition.
Rachel Butler told investigators that the couple, who shared two small children, started fighting in the car on the way home from her husband’s high school reunion, the Houston Chronicle reported.
“They had some type of altercation that was verbal at first but then became physical,” Lt. John Schmitt told the Chronicle. “It continued to the house, and when they got here, there was evidence that there may have been another physical disturbance here.”
Authorities said the fight escalated until the husband grabbed his firearm from his truck.
Neighbors told investigators that the couple had been living in the home for less than two weeks, according to KHOU.
Court records, however, indicate there may have been trouble in the marriage. Rachel Butler filed for divorce a month before the attempted murder-suicide, citing “discord or conflict of personalities,” the Chronicle reported.
Friends and family took to social media Monday to remember the 39-year-old dad.
“Please remember him in this light, the love you can see he had for his family, the love he had for his friends,” wrote one friend on Facebook. “Remember him for the fun loving person we all knew him to be. Things happen, one thing should not take away from who he truly was.”
