On April 19, Tori, a 20-year-old from Texas, shared the story of how her 70-year-old grandmother Penny got married in Las Vegas, Nevada, in a viral tweet.
Penny’s love story with her now-husband Richard, 74, will restore your faith in love. They met online earlier this year and Tori played matchmaker throughout their relationship. To thank her granddaughter, Penny wore Tori’s old prom dress to her wedding.
It’s 2018 and love is dead … at least according to everyone who feels actual heartache when their favorite celebrity couple splits up or when the lust of their life doesn’t swipe right on their dating app of choice. But! Things might not be so bleak after all.
On April 19, Tori, a 20-year-old from Harker Heights, Texas, shared the story of how her 70-year-old grandmother Penny got married in Las Vegas, Nevada — and the fairy-tale love story just might restore your faith in love and happiness.
“My granny ran away to Vegas with a guy she met online that I always joked about her dating, and she got married to him in my prom dress,” Tori — who asked that INSIDER only use her first name — wrote. “This woman is literally my best friend.”
There’s a lot going on in that tweet, and it just scratches the surface of Penny’s love story with her new husband, a man named Richard who she met on Match.com less than a year ago.
“I didn’t want a husband. I didn’t want a boyfriend,” Penny told us. “I just wanted a companion — someone to watch movies with and go out to eat with. I didn’t want a real relationship.”
Richard, 74, lived just a half hour away, and quickly won her over and their whirlwind romance began. The couple went on dinner dates, attended church together, planned trips, and, eventually, Penny moved in with Richard.
Tori, who Penny and Richard credit as their matchmaker, was a part of the relationship every step of the way, whether she was driving Penny to and from dates or offering her advice.
And when Richard realized he wanted to marry Penny, he had to ask Tori for her permission. Of course, she said yes.
To mark the occasion, Tori threw Penny what sounds like a legendary surprise bachelorette party a few weeks later. “She didn’t know about it at all,” Tori said of her gandmother. “She’s a very humble person. If someone’s going to do something for her, she tells them not to do it because the thought of it is enough for her.”
After the bachelorette party, Tori didn’t hear from Penny for a few days. Then, one day Penny called to tell Tori she and Richard got married. Tori was shocked to hear it — she didn’t even know they were in Vegas.
But the surprises didn’t stop there.
Penny wanted to do something special to thank Tori for all her help, so she wore one of Tori’s old prom dresses to the wedding ceremony.
Tori was in disbelief. She forgot that she had even lent the backless, blue gown to Penny for a cruise with Richard several weeks earlier.
But Penny remembered. “I [wore this dress] because if it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t be in Texas. I wouldn’t have met Richard,” Penny told Tori at the time. “I wouldn’t have done half the things I’ve done if it wasn’t for you. Heck, I wouldn’t have played half those games at the bachelorette party if you hadn’t pushed me into it.”
Courtesy of ToryNow that they’re married, Penny and Richard are already planning their next adventures. The couple plans to travel around the US, take another cruise around Mexico, and get to know each other’s families.
And, of course, they’re factoring Tori in because they consider her more like their daughter.
“Poor baby. She’s stuck with us two old people,” Penny joked.
